Art exhibitions to see around town
The Los Angeles art scene is hip this month! Here are three up-and-coming art exhibits you should check out soon.Mike Kelley retrospective @ MOCA: MOCA presents the largest exhibition of Kelley’s work to date, bringing together a wide variety of over 250 works, from 1974 through early 2012. Exploring the themes of repressed memories and disjunctions between the self and social structures, as well as fault lines between the sacred and the profane, this fascinating art show will resonate with you long after you leave the gallery. When: Mar. 31, 2014 to Jul. 28, 2014Where: The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA; 125 North Central Ave. L.A., CA 90012Awkward Family Photos @ The California Heritage Museum: A comedic treat, the “Awkward Family Photos” show is exactly like it sounds — it’s awkward. Childhood friends Mike Bender and Doug Chernack began a blog in May 2009 where they would post their own awkward family photos and those of their friends. The blog soon became an Internet hit, and a friendly place where everyone could come together and share their uncomfortable family moments. “Awkward Family Photos” shares the blog’s highlights, and celebrates the family experience. When: Mar. 28, 2014 to Jul. 27, 2014Where: The California Heritage Museum; 2612 Main Street Santa Monica, CA 90405Edward Bieberman’s “Abbot Kinney and the Story of Venice” @ LACMA: Rediscover your love for the city of Venice with the restoration of Edward Biberman’s mural “Abbot Kinney and the Story of Venice.” Initially created in 1941 for the Post Office in Venice, California, the painting depicts city founder Abbot Kinney’s grand vision for Venice as a West-coast cultural mecca. The exhibition includes other works of art from the LACMA’s collection, as well as historical photographs and ephemera borrowed from local collections that trace the rich and colorful history of Venice. When: May 18, 2014 to Nov. 16, 2014Where: The Los Angeles County Museum of Art; 5905 Wilshire Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90036
