After victory against Channel Islands, Samo remains in playoffs
Chase WohrleStaff WriterAs a result of the home field, 28-20 victory against the Channel Islands Raiders on Friday, Nov. 18, Samo will advance into the second round of the playoffs against Ventura High School on Friday, Nov. 25 at Santa Monica College.Nov. 18's game started strong, with Samo monopolizing the score until the fourth quarter, when the Raiders were able to double their score from 10 to 20."We gave up points, missed turnovers, and had five interceptions dropped," Coach Travis Clark said. "We can't have that if we want to continue."Senior wide receiver Anthony Hernandez agrees, saying the team's effort in the fourth quarter did not match that of the rest of the game."We just need to finish strong," Hernandez said. "We've got to play four quarters. Not just one, two or three."The Ventura High School Cougars, who Samo will play on Friday, are currently 11-0, after their 41-14 victory against Dominguez High School. In the Western Division (IV) of the CIF Southern Section, they are at the top of the rankings, while Samo is tied for second with Arroyo Grande High School. The winner of the Ventura vs. Samo game will go on to play the winner of the Culver City High School vs. Righetti High School game. Culver obtained their first post-season victory against Serra High School, 41-38. Righetti was able to do the same, winning with a bigger point difference against Downey High School, 31-24.In regards to the offensive line, junior center Steve Becerra feels that the line needs to play with more aggression in order to compete with Ventura."We need to get a push," Becerra said. "We need to get them off of the line, and reach the second level."The next game is Friday, Nov. 25 at Santa Monica College. Entrance is $5 for students and $8 for everyone else.cwohrle@thesamohi.com
