Baseball takes San Diego Lions Tournament loss without worry

To call it a bonding experience would be an understatement, a success, accurate. Following Samo baseball’s spring break trip to San Diego, the team has  returned with a renewed purpose, attitude and connection as it gears up for the end of its season and the start of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) games.Samo was one of 116 teams from the South West who traveled to San Diego on March 25 to compete in the San Diego Lions Tournament. Samo started the tournament strong, with an 11-6 win over San Marcos High School, advancing the team to the second round.“Jonathan Rakuljic (’14), Eric Gomez (’13) , Mason Landis (’13),   Alex Turner (’13) and Conner Greene (’13) all hit out of the park home runs. They stepped up and Alex threw a gem of a game,” Coach Kurt Schwengel said.However, issues arose for Samo the next day in a tough game against Ramona High School and the boys lost their first of two elimination games with a score of 9-4, Ramona. The following game against Scripps Ranch High School would prove to be the end of the road for Samo in the San Diego Lions Tournament. The game ended with a close score of 9-8, and the team showed a resilience throughout the slug fest that carried over into the consolation bracket. Its efforts would be rewarded. On the final playing day of the tournament, Samo beat the Brighton High School of Colorado 3-1 in a pitcher’s duel that left Samo with some of the glory it came for.Although it was a tough weekend for Samo, the team worked as a skilled unit, sending five home runs out of the park. Starting pitcher Alex Gironda (’14) threw consistently throughout games, with designated hitter Alex Turner (’13) leading the team with four runs.While the team did not find the overall success it was hoping for in San Diego, it did find something else: a fresh camaraderie.“We stayed four kids to a room which was crazy,” Schwengel said. “Our team was on its A-game. Even though we didn’t win the whole tournament, we came far and did well. To the boys, that’s enough.”Samo also toured the San Diego Padres’ official field, Petco Park, and the team represented Santa Monica  in a variety of different activities offered by the Lions tournament. Playing four games in four days, the team worked together in a way that not only strengthened its playing, but also its communication and bond as a team. The team came back to Santa Monica with a newfound attitude and endurance that will no doubt carry on through the rest of their season.“I wish we could have gone on this trip every year I was here. It is definitely a new tradition within the program,” Lino Lares (’13) said.As the team nears the end of its season, its prospects look clear for the CIF games. It has been a mixed debut season for Schwengel’s team, with an equal amount of losses and wins against Samo’s fellow Ocean League Teams. However, the fresh perspective Schwengel has provided this past year has been beneficial to the team’s success and spirit. The team credits new practicing techniques, coaching techniques and participation in new events as contributing to its development. From the Santa Monica 5000 in the fall to the San Diego Lions Tournament in the spring, the Samo baseball team has taken on an updated air this year, and Coach Schwengel has been at the helm of the newly restored ship.“This is definitely the beginning of a new tradition. This year has been big,” Gironda said.
