Cross Country Runs at Second Ocean League Meet and Cal Poly SLO Invitational

Alison GuhStaff WriterSamo cross country ran in three meets this past week.“We were prepared for the intense week ahead of us,” girls’ captain Karina Sandoval said.The first was the second Ocean League meet, held at Kenneth Hahn Park on Thursday, Oct. 14, in which they came in first as a team in the boys' freshman and jv races.In the boys’ races, freshman Tyler Goodman came in second in the freshman race, senior Logan Weinberg came in first in the jv race, and sophomore Arden Lassalle came in first for the varsity race.In the girls’ races, junior Poppy Denyer came in first in the jv race and fellow junior Alice Wasserman came in second in the varsity race.The top twelve girls and boys on cross country also ran the California Polytechnic San Luis Obispo Invitational meet on Saturday, Oct 8. They left during school Friday to take the four hour drive down to San Luis Obispo, where the team raced the following morning.“I think everyone was excited to be there racing and it showed through in our performance as a team,” senior Tai Legagnoux said.Sophomore Arden Lassalle came in fifth in the boys’ varsity race, senior Logan Weinberg came in seventh in the boy’s junior varsity race, and sophomore Kia Canning came in first in the girls jv race.“After having to run in almost 90 degree weather, we were still able to pull through and show amazing results,” Sandoval said. “We used the mentality we had [while racing] at Kenneth Hahn, and we took it out to Cal Poly, once again showing amazing results, winning medals, and winning the varsity boys race [for our division] as well as the jv girls. We proved that we deserved to be there.”Head coach Tania Fischer also ran at the meet, winning the Women’s Open.“It was really fun watching Fischer race and to be able to cheer her on. It was strange because it's always the other way around,” Canning, winner of the girls jv race, said. “She looked so focused and I'm so proud of her!”Cross country’s next meet is the Mt.
