Football earns first league victory

Chase WohrleStaff WriterSamo beat Morningside last Friday Oct. 29 after losing to Beverly Hills the week before, leaving the game 1-2 in the Ocean League. In Samo’s Homecoming game against Beverly, a victory was just out of reach on the last play of the game after poor defense by Samo. The final score was 12-19.Aside from excessive penalties, the main reason for this loss was Samo’s defense. It was apparent that the Normans had no complications running the ball — the running back was constantly gaining yards whether it was two or 12.When it came to passing, Samo’s safeties took time to respond to completions, letting the Norman receivers maximize their gains.Senior Evan Parra-Raygoza feels that not every player is on the same page when it comes to work ethic.“Some of us tried, some of us stayed in the game the whole time, and some of us just quit,” Parra-Raygoza said.Possibly the most significant injury on the team was that of junior Matt Schultz; the starting tight end tore his Achilles Tendon against Inglewood.“I feel like I let my team down for being injured,” Schultz said.Despite this, Samo came roaring back in its match against Morningside. The Vikings completely swept the Monarchs, not allowing them even a point.   Samo scored 27 points.Morningside’s main weakness was their size, especially on the offensive and defensive lines. The Monarchs’ undersized defensive line struggled to cause problems for Samo’s offensive line.“We finally came out,” said senior Joel Ramos. Sadly, they came out all too late. Samo will not go into the playoffs this year because of their second loss in the league, Beverly. “That’s the end of our season,” said Parra-Raygoza. “We’re done. We can look at the last three games and we are going to try our hardest, but that’s it.”cwohrle@thesamohi.com
