Big Little Lies Review

The popular network HBO recently released yet another hit show, a new miniseries called “Big Little Lies.” This immensely satisfying new drama is about the mysterious lives of the families living in the tranquil and elite neighborhoods surrounding Monterey, California. Based on the best-seller by Liane Moriarty, the show weaves dark humor through the depictions of mischief and deception.The show follows the lives of the parents and the drama surrounding the lives of their children who go to a small elementary school. Gossiping mothers, protective fathers and the appearance of innocent children all complement the idyllic setting. The narrative touches on many societal issues and myths regarding the expectations of the perfect marriage, what it means to be a good parent, and the creation of rumors based on stereotypes.The story is built upon the premise of a murder. The opening minutes of the first episode show an obvious crime scene being investigated by detectives and recuperating bystanders who appear in shock. However, the show doesn’t reveal everything all at once. So, through the entirety of the show, the audience wonders who died, and more importantly, who did it? The narrative switches between real time and flashbacks through the eyes of the main characters and in the stories of the people being questioned about the murder. The story revolves around the perfect yet complicated lives of three mothers played by Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley. These actors do a phenomenal job of bringing these characters to life while also conveying important messages. Usually a show like this has one outstanding actor that commands every scene she takes part in. But that is not the case for this cast. Especially for these three incredible actresses, there is a tremendous amount of balance that allows each one to capture the scene in her own way. Other members of the cast such as Adam Scott and Zoë Kravitz add complexity and depth to their visibly simple characters. Once I started the show, I was hooked. Everything about it captivates and makes the audience get lost through the incredible soundtrack, breathtaking cinematography and constant plot twists and turns. As soon as you hear the opening credits accompanied by Michael Kiwanuka’s beautifully simple yet complex song “Cold Little Heart,” you will be hooked too.
