Jeffery Review

Atlanta born rapper, Young Thug, recently released a new album titled “JEFFERY”. While I was a huge fan of Young Thug’s previous albums “Barter 6” and “Slime Season 3,” his latest release is dreadful. It has two songs, “Pick Up the Phone” and “Guwop,” which were good due to the great production and the mix of different style rappers. The other eight consist of a combination of bad beats, lyrics, rhythm, pitch and diction. On Aug. 26, the day of the release, I frantically refreshed Spotify to get my hands on a highly anticipated album. After hearing the 42 minutes of a major Young Thug let down, I was very disappointed. One of Young Thug’s past albums, “Barter 6,” was a stellar album with the majority of its songs being fantastic. “JEFFERY”, however, has arguably no hits. iTunes has the underwhelming album listed as $7.99, which could be much better spent on a more successful release by Travis Scott, “Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight,” which has a similar style to Young Thug. One of Young Thug’s songs from “JEFFERY” is called “Harambe,” a song made in honor of the legendary, western lowland gorilla who was killed at the Cincinnati Zoo this past May. I was touched by this song when I saw the name because it commemorates the deceased gorilla, but I then listened to it and was appalled. The lyrics make little sense and Young Thug’s voice sounds distorted. I appreciate his salute to Harambe, but the recognition is not enough and it was an offensive tribute. “JEFFERY” is not all bad, though. Even when the music isn’t up to par, Young Thug still finds a way to entertain. For example, the cover of the album displays him wearing a long, blue skirt with a blue umbrella-like hat covering his face, highlighting his ground-breaking style. Not only has his wardrobe changed, but his name as well. He went from Young Thug to Jeffery, in hopes that his bizarre name change may lead to heightened anticipation for the release. Young Thug later stated that this name change is just temporary and he will change it back after the noise surrounding his newest project dies down. What is confusing is the fact that iTunes has the artist of “JEFFERY” listed as Young Thug, when Young Thug clearly made a point of stating that he changed his name to Jeffery.I was ecstatic when I found out that Young Thug’s album “JEFFERY” was released, and was eager to listen to it. It was a major disappointment, and arguably Young Thug’s worst album yet.
