Samo students become festival-goers at Day N Night

Over the summer, many Samo students made the journey to Orange County to attend the Day N Night Festival. The event was headlined by first class artists such as Flume and A$AP Rocky, who managed to attract fans from all over LA County. While not quite at the level as a festival like Coachella, Day N Night has been a promising form of entertainment for a few years, but in 2016, it made the transition to a large scale event. Day N Night seemed to have it all; popular performers and outside stages, but similar to every complicated event, it had its issues.Day n Night was a rap-heavy affair with crowds who didn’t like to wait. Multiple performers weren’t on time and often they were completely rescheduled, leading to some fans missing their favorite performers.“It was so disorganized and people didn’t go on time at all,” Degas Tabarez (’19) said.It was quite apparent that these scheduling issues frustrated festival goers. Day n Night also had a missing act, Kodak Black. The up-and-coming rapper was sent to jail before the festival and Day N Night did not find a replacement. While many people were disappointed by the incarceration of a highly anticipated performer, there was still many more acts to be seen. And after a day of intense rap performances, the festival offered artists who specialize in the field of electronic music.Tabarez’s favorite performer was Flume, one of the headliners of the event who is known for maintaining a relaxing and psychedelic aesthetic to match his experimental sound..“The vibe was way better than any other performances,” Tabarez said. “In simpler terms, it was just a perfect mix of chill and hype.”Collin Ferrara (’17), a Samo senior, attended the event with a group of friends expecting to love all the headlining acts. After seeing most of the artists, his favorite was actually  a more under the radar performance: Soullection.“It was a group of DJs that played hype old Kanye songs,” Ferrara said. “Although most of the performers were very new and mainstream rappers, it’s good to know someone at the festival took some time to appreciate a little more retro rap in a sense.”Day n Night is a weekend to remember for everyone in attendance, with enough action packed in for 3 days to satisfy one for weeks. And though it had multiple organizational problems, Day N Night gave Samo students a weekend to remember.
