New year, new trends
You walk into school on the first day, wearing your favorite clothes to start the year off on a good note. You see your friends for what could be the first time in months, and see the new and exciting trends that haven’t been seen before. Although the school year has just begun, many fresh trends have already been spotted by the students of Samo. Whether it’s intentional or not, the clothes that you wear convey a distinct message about who you are as a person and what excites you. English teacher Chon Lee has noticed an increase on our campus of more artistic shirts that display a student’s creativity and interests. “[I’ve noticed] more graphic T-shirts or things with pictures or imagery [and] words,” Lee said. The transition from plain shirts to increasingly artistic shirts shows the desire of the Samo student body to more outwardly express themselves. Ava Tung (’19) has found that a callback to the 90’s has also been noticeable in the wardrobe of Samo students through a return of more distressed clothing. “I’ve noticed that ripped clothes are pretty new, like ripped band shirts and grunge,” Tung said. “Ripped clothes were not popular now, but they were popular before and they just came back. I think everything kind of goes out and then comes back in.”Although the 90’s weren’t that long ago, the popular trends from back then have already made a comeback. While increasingly ripped clothing has mostly been noticed on girls, Alex Martin (’19) has seen the guys of Samo wearing some new trends as well. “[I’ve seen] a lot of khaki with black and joggers,” Martin said. The increase in joggers might show a desire in Samo students for clothing that is both stylish and comfortable. Adidas are also a new fad in footwear that has been spotted all over campus on both boys and girls. Tupelo Sullivan (’20) has noticed that one specific type of Adidas is the most popular on our campus. “Stan Smiths,” Sullivan said, noting how many students, both boys and girls, are wearing them. Tung has also noticed an increase in these stylish sneakers on our campus. “Stan Smiths have been popular but now more people are getting them.” Tung said. According to Tung, once enough people bought Stan Smiths, they evolved from a trend into a basic wardrobe staple. Adidas have been popular for decades, and it does not seem like they will be going out of style any time soon. Some new backpack trends have also been emerging on campus. Backpacks that are less stiff and structured have recently become popular. “I see saggy backpacks on girls and guys, so it differentiates,” Martin said. Along with a change in structure, new brands of backpacks are also being seen on campus more frequently. “Now a lot more people have the Herschel backpacks.” Tung said. A good backpack is a necessity for school so Samo students are branching out to find backpacks that they really enjoy. The students of Samo have already made many unique and interesting choices in style this school year. These trends will come and go but when students find clothing that they really love they will continue to incorporate it into their wardrobe, even when it has gone out of style. Lee has noticed that while trends pass, items that students truly connect to stick around. “Trends are just things that might be momentary but then if it truly connects to themselves and their true likes I feel like it will last alot longer.”
