Hot Off the Lunch Benches: Election
Responses and photos gathered by Hannah Kleiman, Katie Osaki and Nico Young Trystan Tarver ('19)I feel like the only thing he associates with African Americans and minorities is poverty, which is really not okay. We are more than just the projects and the alleys with the gang members, We’re people, we’re a community as one. And I just feel like him being president is really gonna break that up.Sonam KC ('18)I think that it’s very degrading to women all around the United States that an uneducated rich man could be voted before a woman could. I hate Trump, he’s the worst.Vladimir Von Klan (’18)I have fear for my two lesbian moms. I have fear for everyone. But the only advice that I have to give you is that we unite, we watch each others’ backs. Fight the racism, fight the hatred.I think things like [the Samo protest on Nov. 9], showing that we want change to happen and taking action to doing things like that, whether it’s in the form of protesting or rallying, or whatever it might be in a peaceful way, just showing what we want to get done. Ellison Levison (’18) Everything about [Donald Trump is scary]. He’s racist, he’s homophobic, he’s sexist, he’s bragged about sexual assault, he’s islamophobic, he’s just full of hatred. The only reason why he won is because a lot of people chose not to vote. So I don’t know it’s just a crazy day, a sad day beyond belief.Victor Cole, TrainerThis should encourage more young people to go out and vote and fight for change, strength in numbers because individual voices are not going to be heard. Change won’t happen unless us as a people, the human race, not “color,” but as a race, change. If we can’t all stand to do something, we are not going to get heard. Imani Archer (’18)I feel that a lot of people were uneducated and that a lot of people took this election as a joke and he was taken as a joke because of social media. I feel that if it was taken in a more serious way and a different tone, this wouldn’t have happened.Brandon Hall-Pascascio (’17)Honestly as a student body, the best thing we can do is just go out there and fight, not violently fight, but go out there and say that even though we’re high school students, we’re not 18 yet, we didn’t get to vote, but we’re still out there.Matthew Flanders, teacherWe can advocate change by excelling in academics, getting into good schools and taking your way of thinking off into the greater world. That’s how we’re going to get change in this country.
