A hard fought game ends in a win for Baseball against Culver City
The Samo baseball team faced Culver City High School in a home game on Thursday, May 4. With an early lead, Samo defeated their opponents with an end score of 3-2. Samo scored the first run of the game during the first inning and another two runs during the second, setting the score at 3-0. Although Culver scored two in the third, the Samo boys refused to let Culver get any more runs the rest of the game, ruining their chances of catching up.According to Christian (Creg) Velasquez (’18), who scored the first run, the team was more than satisfied to take the win against Culver.“The game went well against Culver and it was pleasing to see them quiet in the dugout,” Velasquez said. “We took care of the things that we needed to do in order to win the game—We swung the bats aggressively and we made plays on the field. I did what I needed to do, making my plays in the field and going 2 for 3 at the plate, scoring our first run. An early lead in the first inning got momentum on our side.”Additionally, Randy Marinez (’17) said that the vehement pitching by Dax Speakman (’17) gave them a real advantage over the other team.“What helped us was that Dax Speakman gave us a quality start,” Martinez said. “He threw over a hundred pitches and he was actually going through with a minor injury too so he was really pushing himself. And our bats were doing pretty well, we had runners on a lot of squaring positions and we managed to pick up on the other team’s mistakes.” This was an important win for the team because it helped in pushing them forward in terms of League. “Everyone wanted to win this game badly because in order to make playoffs, we needed that dub,” Velasquez said. With the team’s dedication and focus out on the field, their chances of making it to playoffs are looking hopeful. “Our motivation was high the whole game,” Martinez said. “I think that we had the most energy that we’ve seen all season and hopefully we can carry it through to El Segundo and carry it on to playoffs.”
