Baseball makes a quick recovery against Hawthrone

On March 23, the baseball team took on Hawthorne High School on home grounds in an exciting and intense game. After falling several runs behind early in the game, they recovered to tie the score 8-8 in the seventh inning with a line drive to the right field, scoring an RBI. The game then went into extra innings, ending with Samo defeating their opponents 9-8 in the ninth.Rather than letting the scoreboard discourage them when they were behind, the Samo boys were strategic about their plays and fought even harder against the other team.Holt Jones (’17), Samo’s pitcher, stated that the team was faced with some obstacles they had to tackle throughout the game. “We had a few obstacles that we had to overcome to win,” Jones said. “One key play was a single to the right field gap by Tristan Gallegos which scored the tying run and another would be a hit by Desmond Bunting in the bottom of the ninth to score Oscar Corona to win.”Staying focused on working together and taking it step-by-step contributed to their overall win. “Since we were tied after seven, we went into extra innings, which goes until someone wins. We made a comeback by staying with each other and getting behind our teammates and getting one run at a time,” Jones said. Coach Adam Klein noted how it can be difficult to catch up once the other team has a big lead. He was impressed with how the team turned the game around.“It is not easy to come back, having been down five runs at one point and then down four runs at another point in the game,” Klein said. “I am very proud of the boys not only for coming out on top after going into extra innings, but also specifically for the way that they fought for the entirety of the game.”The Samo baseball team knocked out another game with their win against Hawthorne, sticking it out and working as a team all the way up to the end.“We have been practicing for situations like this, and the boys did a great job never giving up and staying behind one another,” Klein said.
