Boys soccer derails Beverly 3-0
Samo against Beverly Hills High School is a timeless rivalry in most sports, and on Tuesday, Feb. 9, the intense history shifted its focus to the pitch, for a boys varsity soccer match. Beverly, who went into the game winless, was looking to salvage their disappointing season with a victory over the home team Vikings. Samo, on the other hand, looked to continue on their campaign of contention.The match began and both teams came out playing fast. Though the each team had looks to score, neither side could one up the other.The first half continued to evoke hard playing, and around fifteen minutes into the game, Samo was in control of the ball consistently. On one offensive attack, right wing Jasper Byrne (’16) launched an outside shot at the Beverly goalkeeper. The ball was deflected right in front of midfielder Rico McGary (’17), who swiftly kicked the ball into the back of the net.Now up 1-0, Samo continued to disrupt their rivals, who struggled to maintain possession. Shortly after his first goal, McGary found himself with space in front of the goal once again, and he scored for the second time with a powerful right-footed shot.The first half ended with Samo up 2-0, and both teams regrouped before play resumed.At the start of the second half, Samo continued where they left off, dominating the match with great ball movement and speed.For most of the final half, Beverly could not piece together a sufficient attack, but they did a better job at stopping Samo’s. The score stayed at 2-0 until late in the match, when striker Chase Odening (’18) scored off of a pass from McGary.Samo won 3-0, and they will look to continue their great play in the future.
