Boys soccer reclaims win at home against Lawndale

On Friday, Jan. 27, Samo’s boys soccer team won their game against Lawndale High School, 2-1. The team recovered their winning streak at home after a disappointing loss against El Segundo High School.Lawndale posed as another threat for Samo’s record. The team knew this going into the game, so the stakes were high for the team to win.“They weren't the most organized team, but they were able to create chances for themselves on goal,”  Kerby Diaz (’17) said. Despite the chances Lawndale had, Samo kept the ball with their offense for the majority of the first half. After many more chances for Samo, Owen Koetters (’18) was able to score, putting Samo in the lead 1-0.Moments later, Samo lost the lead as Lawndale shot a penalty kick into the back of the net. “Lawndale got back into the game after a bad call by the referees,” goalie Nate Comay (’19) said about the penalty. The goal wasn’t too big of a setback for Samo though. The second half was intense with both teams trying to score as hard as possible, creating as many opportunities as they could. Eventually, the game moved into overtime.“Going into ‘golden goal extra time,we didn't let up and kept fighting to put away any opportunity we had," Diaz said. Their efforts paid off when Noah Rose (’18) scored, giving Samo the 2-1 lead and the win. “This gets us one step closer to our CIF playoff dream,” Comay said. The last minute win was a relief for the team. After losing to El Segundo, this win at home boosted their confidence, making them ready for their next game against Culver City High School on Tuesday, Feb. 7.
