Girls lacrosse decks their 2017 season

On March 1, the girls lacrosse team started their competitive season against Westlake High School. According to coach, Justine Beirne, the team is prepared to fight their hardest in all their games this year. “We have a strong schedule, but there are a lot of people on the schedule who have a lower win to loss ratio than us and that should be enough to get us into the post-season (CIF),” Beirne said. The team started their work back in August with their first conditioning module. The girls worked a lot on their fitness, particularly long distance running as a team in order to build endurance. After cardio and stamina, the team worked on ground balls and the basics of lacrosse like catching and passing. Currently, they are finishing their offseason with defense and shooting drills.“We’ve been consistently building on their skills. We have some very experienced and established men’s players who come and help the girls and teach them game IQ,” Beirne said.Over the past few months, the team has come together and Beirne has been pleasantly surprised to see their constant support for one another. All the girls are looking forward to playing their best in the coming season and showing all their hard work.“I’m most excited about improving my lacrosse performance and becoming a better overall player,” Jaelyn Anderson (’19) said. “I expect to see lots of hard work from the team.”Beirne has very high expectations for their team this year. They have been waking up for 6 a.m. practices and working on eliminating all their possible weaknesses. Since lacrosse is a lesser known sport in California, Beirne says the community is very close. Giving the girls the opportunity to play with collegiate girls and women from adult club teams. “Right now our goal is to get to the state tournament,” Beirne said. “After that we are going to focus on training strong athletes for the future and come back even stronger next year.”
