Girls soccer continues winning streak
On Friday, Feb. 3, the Samo girls soccer team beat Beverly Hills High School for their third consecutive match at home in a week's span, with a score of 2-0. As of right now, the girls are 8-0 in league and have a few games remaining. Right out of the gate, Samo played a very coordinated and possessive game; they gave Beverly no wiggle room to play. The defense was consistently swarming their players making them unable to create any sort of momentum, often leaving them baffled. Midfielder Sierra Merille (’19) scored a single goal during the first half after outplaying the Norman defense and burying one in the back of their net. “We played very well defensively and dominated the majority of the game,” assistant coach Angel Vasquez said. “The girls were eager to beat their rivals and went out and did it.”Both teams seemingly became more aggressive throughout the second half of the game. Players were very physical towards one another. At one point players on both sides were very frustrated with how the other team played, further fueling and promoting an aggression. Midfielder Giulia Trevellin (’20) who was playing on defense at the time had a phenomenal goal from outside the box securing the final goal of the game.Throughout the season, the girls have looked incredibly strong. As prefest in previous articles, they have not lost a single home game this season and are continuously dominating in league play. After competing in Ocean League, Merille commented on playoffs and her mentality going into each game.“I’m taking it day by day and game by game,” Merille said. “As of now I am confident in our ability to do well.” Samo is scheduled to play at Culver City High School on Feb. 7, and at home against El Segundo High School on Senior Day, Feb. 9, which will conclude league play. Playoffs start Feb. 14.
