Girls soccer wins their sixth consecutive game against Culver City
On Wednesday, Jan. 30, Samo’s girls soccer won their sixth consecutive game against Culver City High School 4-0.Samo played aggressively and came into the first half with intensity that sent shockwaves through Culver. When Culver make hiccups, Samo was there to take advantage of them. “I was very pleased with the outcome of the game. I’m happy for the team. I knew this was a collision course of two teams in league who were pretty much dominante,” coach Jimmy Chapman said. During the first half, forwards Maya Cooper (’19) and Dai Williams (’19) scored goals. After a brief scuffle against a Culver player, midfielder Giulia Trevellin (’20) went down holding her ankle in agony. The referees refused to stop the game to accommodate Trevellin’s injury which caused a fleet of Culver players to continue playing while most of Samo stopped. Thankfully, goalie Madeline Kresin (’17) was able to stop the advancement of the Culver players by saving a goal. Trevellin was later carried off the field and was announced to have re-sprained her ankle. The half ended with the score 2-0.The second half was almost a repeat of the first except Samo adapted to Culver’s playing style and out performed them in every aspect. Cooper and Williams put another two goals on the board. Towards the end of the match, defender Maiya Coleman (’17) went in for a slide tackle and ended up hurting her back. She was later escorted off the field for further evaluations.“I was concerned for them,” midfielder Alex Steigelfest (‘19) said. “They are both phenomenal players that play key roles on the field. We definitely took a blow in that regards.”
