Girls water polo beats El Segundo by a wide margin

Samo’s girls water polo team came through with a win against El Segundo on Jan. 14. The Greenies prevailed in this match, beating El Segundo with a final score of 15-2.The team got off to a strong start, finishing the first quarter with a leading score of 3-1. Kalen Lemann (’17) was an important factor, intercepting 3 balls in the second quarter. With vigorous ambition, Samo’s lead improved to 8-2 by the end of the second quarter.According to Arielle Melamed (’18), their endurance was due to the hard work they’ve put in during practice.“We’ve been doing a lot of conditioning drills and it’s really paid off,” Melamed said. “We aren’t getting as tired during games.”The chemistry on the court is also something that really improves the way the team plays, according to head coach Matthew Flanders.“These girls have been playing together for a solid year, during thee off-season,” Flanders said. “It really helps on the court.”As it was only the second game of the season, girls water polo has much more in store for future games as there is always room for improvement.“We’re not finishing our shots as much as I’d like to see,” Flanders said. “We have opportunities, but we don’t follow through with them.”The Greenies will take this experience, and use it to their advantage in the rest of the season.
