Girls water polo grabs another win against Culver

On Jan. 19, Samo girl’s water polo team crushed Culver City High School, winning their third home game of the season with a final score of 18-4.Many players scored goals during the first half of the game, finishing the second quarter with a score of 10-2. These players include Audrey Hattori (’17), Alissa Hattori (’17), Shanna Stevenson (’17) and Lauren Gaudry (’19). The lady greenies played well throughout the game, but their quick lead definitely put them at an advantage.“I feel like we started off strong which has been a big thing,” Emma Ware (’18) said.In the third quarter, many new players were rotated in and according to coach Matthew Flanders this was a part of what helped Samo to keep their lead.“I think the best thing that we did was involve everybody; everybody got playing time,” Flanders said.The team continued to work hard during the third quarter and due to goals scored by Gaudry, Stevenson, Alissa Hattori and Kalen Lehmann (’17). Samo finished the quarter with a score of 14-4.The lady greenies finished strong in the fourth quarter, with goals from Ana Gibson (’18) and Ava Tung (’19), as well as blocking by Sara Amirdelfan (’19) and Stevenson. Culver made many attempts to score but thanks to Ware, the team’s goalie, Samo kept their lead. “Overall, I think we need to improve our communication with each other,” Smith said.Even though they will always have room to improve, Coach Flanders attributes the team’s win to their diligence and commitment to their sport.“We’ve got a lot of really dedicated girls who work really hard,” Flanders said. Samo gave their all to win their third home game of the season and are going into their next game with high hopes.
