Girls water polo keeps stong record with win over Torrance

The girls water polo team continued their winning streak after a 14-4 win against Torrance High School on Jan. 27. The Greenies got off to a good start by immediately taking control of the game and scoring the first six points in the first quarter, three of which due to Kalen Lehmann (’17). According to head coach Matthew Flanders the girls’ early lead motivated them to keep fighting hard throughout the entire game.“That’s our game intensity,” Flanders said. “When we come out playing the way we can play, teams in our league have a hard time keeping up.”With a generous lead after the first half, Olivia Schwartz (’16) highlighted the third quarter with a goal from nearly halfway across the pool, ending the last few seconds of the quarter with a score of 11-3.“It’s good to be relaxed, but we need to focus on what we need to do,” Flanders said. “We’re here to play water polo, and we play at a high level.”According to Olivia Allen (’16) knowing that the team can compete and play with other high level teams helps them have a strong mentality, and keeps their team spirit up.“Our team camaraderie is something important we always have,” Allen said. “We’re working really well as a team.”According to Flanders, even with all of their success, there is always room for improvement.“We need to improve on consistency,” Flanders said. “In the first quarter, we pushed the counterattack, but started to slack off the rest of the game. We need to work on staying intense the whole game.”If the girls continue in this positive path, then they can parallel another season like last year’s season– where they made it all the way to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) semi-finals– or even better.
