Girls Water Polo takes first loss against Riverside Polytechnic
On Nov. 29, Samo’s girls water polo team lost to Riverside Polytechnic High School (Riverside/Poly), ending their first home game of the season with a final score of 2-6. During the first quarter, the team made many small mistakes which allowed Riverside to get a four point lead, finishing the first quarter with a score of 0-4. In the second quarter, both teams were given multiple penalty shots but due to Samo’s successful interceptions and blocking of passes, neither team scored leaving the score as it was. Although Riverside took a quick lead, the greenies worked hard on defense and were able to demonstrate their strengths.“During the game we showed the skills that we practice during our warm ups and did a good job adjusting to defense,” McKenna Davis (’19) said. In the third quarter of the game, multiple new players were rotated in and Lauren Gaudry (’19) scored two penalty goals. The team’s goalie Amalie Soli (’17) blocked multiple shot attempts, but Riverside still managed to score another goal, finishing the third quarter leading 2-5.During the final quarter, the team had many good passes, especially between Audrey Hattori (’17) and Shanna Stevenson (’17). Unfortunately, Riverside/Poly still scored another goal, ending the game with a final score of 2-6. The team tried their hardest but according to Gaudry they still have a lot that they would like to improve upon.“We want to work on our 6 to 5 offense as well as our communication with each other like calling for the ball and communicating switches,” Gaudry said. The lady greenies took a loss for their first home game of the season and took another hit against Redondo Union High School but are hoping to do well in their next tournament this weekend.
