Samo’s Boys Soccer Winning Streak Comes to a Halt

On Jan. 25, the Vikings’ boys soccer team seeked a third win at home against El Segundo High School, but knew it was going to be a challenging one. Despite their battle, they could not capitalize – losing 2-1.Samo came out in the first half fired up and displayed why they’re undefeated at home. They possessed the ball extremely well and it didn’t take long before midfielder Owen Koetters (’18) struck one into the back of the net.The Vikings continued to dominate the game and felt super confident going into halftime.“We were feeling super good about how we were playing to begin the game and although we only netted in one, we went into the second half a little cocky,” goalkeeper Nate Comay (’19).The referee blew the whistle and the second half had begun. It was evident that El Segundo was unhappy with their first half performance and decided to step up their pay in the last half. The tables finally turned and with El Segundo’s burst of momentum, they scored the tying goal.Samo was caught on their heels, giving El Segundo a huge rush and a chance to take the lead. The Vikings just could not get their intensity up and continued their sloppy play nearing the end of the game. With a few minutes remaining, El Segundo took the lead and started to play extremely defensive with the final minutes approaching. While they had a few chances with little time left, Samo lost the game, losing their home winning streak as well.“Being over-confident definitely played a role in this loss and everyone is speechless. We’re going into our next game angry and fired up for some redemption,” midfielder Justin Bautista (’19) said.
