Tennis singles player Victor Cheng (’16) stays undefeated
After two games and four sets on Tuesday, May 5, Victor Cheng (’16) stays undefeated in league with a record of 6-0, and has qualified for the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) individual league finals.According to head tennis coach Wilston Poon, Cheng is considered to go very far due to his high tennis IQ and experience at being at the varsity level for 4 straight years, where he has been able to make it past CIF state every year.Last year Cheng made it as far as the quarterfinals of CIF state last year, and will look to make it even farther this year by improving his footwork and increasing his speed.According to Cheng he was able to win Thursday’s match by staying focused and by performing exceptionally well in all his serves and forehands, leading to his 6-1 victory in every single set.“As always, Victor finds a way to impress me everytime with his game,” Evan Hiltunen (’16) said. “He is passionate about the sport and puts his heart into it creating him to be one of the best high school tennis stars we have seen. He inspires me to play at the best of my abilities and hopefully become as good as him one day.”“By winning his matches and dominating his opponents, he gives the team extra motivation to perform at their absolute best,” Poon said.Cheng will be competing in the CIF individual finals this Thursday, in hopes of bringing a title to Samo.
