Another win for Samo softball team
Samo added another win to their record after their game against La Quinta High School on May 23, with a score of 7-1. The game was erratic, starting off slow in the first couple innings. The team suddenly started a factory line of runs in the fourth inning: five in a row. Samo kept the bases loaded, and kept hitting fly balls the other team couldn’t catch. Bebe Alvarado (’17), Elizabeth Martinez (’20) and Makensey Druckman (’17) all hit strong and far to keep the team scoring, with Martinez even getting two runners through. The middle of the game stayed relatively calm, with great pitching from Kenedee Jamerson (’17). It kicked back into scoring when Amanda Gonzalez ('18) hit a line drive and started the chain again, getting another run in. Coach Kalie Nakao (’11) knew the reason behind that momentum.“Hitting is contagious,” Nakao said. “Once one person got it going, everybody just followed and we were able to cash in. They came out, did a lot better time scoring when we had runners on. They were able to capitalize and get timely hits, so that was really good.”Alvarado pinned the reason behind the dip in momentum in the middle of the game to over confidence.“We start off strong, and then we’re like, ‘we got this in the bag,’ and then we see that we’re kind of crumbling up,” Alvarado said. “Then we’re like, ‘okay, we gotta snap out of that and come back,’ and altogether just do better.”Like the rest of her team, Alvarado is excited to keep going in the competition.“It’s definitely exciting how far we’ve come,” Alvarado said. “I hope we get a ring and make our school proud this year.”
