Girls volleyball topples Hawthorne in 3-0 win

On Oct. 20, Samo girls volleyball team quickly beat Hawthorne high school 3-0.In the first set, Samo came out strongly, winning 25-7. According to Veronica Johnson (’18), the team started off the match nicely as many players on the team got in the game and made impacts early.“We talked really well on the court, and worked together as a team” Johnson said. After the comfortable win in the first set, the girls kept the momentum going and took the second set 25-8. In this set, Hawthorne struggled to return an impressive barrage of serves from Samo.In the third, Hawthorne put up a fight against the home team Vikings, and the previous dominating play seemed to falter. After a back-and-forth score change, Samo managed to secure a 25-16 win, resulting in a 3-0 victory. According to Grace Garland (’17), the team needs to make some minor fixes before their match with rival El Segundo High School next week.“We need to improve on communicating, but our serving was very good,” Garland said. “Next week we are playing El Segundo, so that’s going to be hard.”Head coach Wynn Trihn is also looking ahead to the future matchup at Lawndale High School, and according to Trihn, he is keeping the preparation routine similar.“We are going to continue to do the same things in terms of emphasizing first contact, being able to set all our hitters when we need to; mainly being disciplined on defense,” Trihn said.Samo will head into next week with an undefeated record, but only time will tell if their perfect season will stay intact.
