More than okay with Netflix's "I Am Not Okay With This"

On Feb. 26 Netflix released “I Am Not Okay With This,” a comedy and coming of age series based on the comic book by Charles Forsman. The show was well awaited by many “It” fans because of the mention of Sophia Lillis and Wyatt Oleff, co-stars from the “It” movie series. Lillis is featured as protagonist Sydney Novak, and the show focuses on her journey of navigating high school and dealing with her supernatural powers, alongside her neighbor Staney Barber (Wyatt Oleff) and best friend Dina (Sofia Bryant). This witty comedy explores Sydney’s teenage angst as she goes through the stages of rebellion, questioning her sexuality and dealing with boys. Sydney’s background is introduced right away within the first couple minutes of the show where she reveals her current situation, having to take care of her younger brother and having a troubled relationship with her mom, at home and her relationships with the important people in her life. This sets the tone for the rest of the show and explains why Sydney’s perspective on everything is gloomy and anger oriented. Sydney deals with not fitting in because she is seen as the quiet shy girl that she became after her father’s death. However she finds comfort in Dina, her polar opposite best friend, up until they have a falling out because of Sydney’s lack of experience with boys and her secret of having superpowers that she is unable to control. She feels out of place because of how she can not relate to anyone or tell anyone about her secret until she begins to hang around Stanley Barber. With him she finds herself more comfortable and discovers a different side to herself.  Lillis does a great job portraying Sydney, a sassy rebellious teen with a quick mouth that gets her into a lot of trouble, besides the fact that her actual personality is the complete opposite of her character. Oleff, similar to Lillis, gets into the character Stanely Barber, the weird nonchalant kid on the block, incredibly well. For him, however, it is much easier because of the fact that Stanely’s characteristics are similar to his actual charisma, he told Seventeen magazine. The relationship these two have on the screen works rather well because of the fact they have worked together before. A majority of the ideas presented in this show are original, especially the plot. The show talks about exploration of sextuality, which is not seen often in these types of shows. In addition, at various parts of the show you think that you have figured out, but then it is not what you were expecting, which is why this is a good show to watch in one day. Another reason why it is easy to binge is the 20 minute length of each of the seven episodes. Overall this is a binge worthy show that has something for everyone and will keep you waiting for the announcement of its second season.
