Same gets a fall facelift
Since the end of the 2016-17 school year, Samo has made some substantial changes in efforts to beautify its campus. Amidst the ongoing construction and installation of turf in the science quad, Samo will be expecting a new scoreboard on the field and marquee this fall, on the meridian parallel side of Samo. The minor renovations started in early July with the installation of artificial turf. The turf was put in on the lawns of the science quad. The decision to install was made early last year by the Campus Beautification Committee, led by Joan Krenik.A branch of the PTA, the Campus Beautification Committee is made up of parents and administrators who gather and decide on non-constructional changes to make to Samo. These changes are geared toward the quality of life at Samo and the scenery.Money for non-constructional changes to campus, such as the turf, the scoreboard and marquee, are funded by revenue Samo gets for renting out Barnum and campus. The committee landed on artificial turf for the science quad, due to the fact that, along with no upkeep necessary, when conduits are installed for AC this December it will be easy to roll up and dig underneath. With the turf costing over $100,000 to put in, this beauty certainly comes at a price.Additionally, Samo will be installing a new scoreboard. With processing and fabrication considered, Samo should be expecting the new board by the end of November. The broken scoreboard will be replaced with a new board, featuring settings for the scorekeeping of four sports: Lacrosse, Football, Track and Soccer. Now that the committee has grossed the ‘rental money’ to fund it, the $25,000 scoreboard will become a reality by the new year. Samo will also be gaining a marquee in the new year. Visible from the Pico street/Le Meridien parallel region of campus, our current sign will be replaced with a new $35,000 marquee that Samo has invested in. The committee has been fundraising for the marquee for over five years.Between the scoreboard, sign and sod, many changes have been made to make Samo more welcoming. According to the Campus Beautification Committee and Samo administrative staff, they have many more projects in mind and in the works.
