Campus Beautification
On Saturday, Oct. 7 the PTSA held a beautification day at Samo. This particular beautification was the process of creating visual improvements, by the addition of plants, throughout the Samo campus. To participate in the Samo Beautification, students just needed to show up on Saturday between 9 a.m. through 1 p.m. at the Science Quad. Serving as a Delians event, this beautification focused on the school’s garden terraces. A mix of over 40 students including those seeking community service hours, those assigned to Super Saturday and those wishing for more school involvement, arrived to volunteer in various activities. Some of the activities included planting, derooting and fertilizing. Zoe Lin (’19), a volunteer, explained how she heard of this event and why she decided to attend. “I received an email to attend Beautification Day, and I thought it sounded pretty interesting. I attended because I wanted to become more involved in our school events this year,” Lin said. Parents supervised and organized the event, while professional gardeners directed students on proper techniques for cultivation. Every volunteer was actively involved, showing appreciation towards their campus. Oliver Gutierrez (’20) outlined his experience and responsibility with this Samo Beautification. “We were first taught how to correctly dig a perfect planting hole by a gardener and then we were given plants to bury around the Main Quad, such as yellow Yarrow. We also added fertilizer to many of the pre existing plants,” Gutierrez said. All the necessary tools were provided for the students, and water was available throughout the event. Towards the event of the Beautification, pizza was delivered and given to our hardworking volunteers. The Samo Beautification was very open and unrestricted, allowing anyone to participate, including parents. Students weren’t required to work the full 4 hours, they could come and go as they pleased and were given freedom to choose which assignment they assisted in. Every time the volunteers walk by the newly planted trees, they will be reminded of their greatly appreciated contributions to the campus. Both will experience and develop through high school together.
