Palentine's Day
(Article by Yvonne Liu and Kimiya Aframian) If you’re single on Valentine’s Day, join the millions of other high school students searching for an reassuring way to celebrate their independence and friendship with others. Valentine’s Day is not just a holiday for couples, but it’s also for others in relationships, such as Pals; leading to the idea of Palentine’s Day. A definite necessity in the Palentine’s Day festivities includes the perfect movie to watch together. Somewhat sticking to the Valentine’s theme, this movie should definitely be a romance or at least a romance-comedy.-Valentine’s Day - Relating to the numerous interconnected lives, various individuals find themselves wielding their way through the joys and woe of love. As the story unravels, we follow each character into their individual lives of commited loves, heartbreaks, and first dates. We find ourselves falling in love with them and believing that true love may actually be possible. Additionally, Valentine’s Day has a phenomenal cast, including some of the biggest names in Hollywood: Taylor Swift, Julia Roberts, and Anne Hathaway, just to name a few. -Crazy, Stupid, Love- As the title of this movie may suggest, this movie is all about the complications and complexity of falling in love. The film pinpoints multiple types and stages of love, in terms of marriage, dating, divorce and the single life. The various turning points and plot twists add a hilarious touch to the semi-realistic theme of the movie. If the idea of the movie is not convincing enough to sit down and watch it, consider the casting: Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Steve Carell and Julianne Moore are only four of the famous actors and actresses in the movie.-Twilight- It’s time to choose: Team Edward or Team Jacob? Palentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to binge all of the Twilight movies in the series and watch as mortal Bella decides between a life of vampires or humans. Although it may be a little cheesy, the romance between the characters and the inevitable love triangle are everything viewers search for in the perfect romantic movie. On the plus side, actors Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner co-star Kristen Stewart to keep the characters always interesting. -The Fault in Our Stars- If you haven’t been living under a rock, then you have certainly heard of the everlasting love story of Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters. Their story exaggerates the complications of love. Since both were afflicted by cancer, Hazel and Gus both feel that their significant other “really understands them.” As they start to fall deeply in love with each other and move past their childhood, we witness their own struggles of the learning the unfairnesses of adulthood. Touching upon the theme of life and death, the unnoticed, underlying meaning of this refers back to a work on Shakespeare stating that it’s not fate that dooms us, it's our own failings. -10 Things I Hate About You- This light-hearted movie is a modern take on William Shakespeare’s the Taming of the Shrew. The big rule in the Stratford house is no dating, but once character Bianca (Larissa Oleynik) is ready to begin her romantic life, their father decides to alter the rule. No, Bianca can start to date once her shrewd older sister Kat (Julia Styles) does. Teaming up with her potentially future boyfriend, Bianca works to find her unsociable sister a man who can tolerate her. -How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days- As an advice columnist for a gossip magazine all Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson) wants is her own freedom to write. (oh what a coincidence) Her ultimate goal is to write about politics and actual news, rather than writing about which shampoo works best for blondes. As she keeps getting rejected by her editor, Lana (Bebe Neuwirth), Andie eventually agrees to write a piece about losing a guy in ten days in hope of convincing her editor of her writing talent and her promotion of freedom of press. But as she claims her victim for this experiment, she starts to fall in love with Ben Berry (Matthew McConaughey) who is convinced that he can make any girl fall in love with him in ten days. As the story unravels we find out that both their plans backfire. -Grease- This classic romantic- comedy telling the tale of star-crossed lovers remains an all time favorite of Palentine’s Day celebrants. No matter how many thousands of times one watches the film, it never lowers in quality. Grease does not only provide the visual effects of the movie, but also gives viewers an opportunity to sing along to the popular songs. Watch Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton) and Danny Zuko (John Travolta) continue their “Summer Loving” throughout the school year. All the while, compare your high school experience with the characters in the movie. The perfect movie must be paired with an equally perfect pint of ice-cream to completely enhance the Palentine’s Day experience. Luckily, Ben and Jerry’s has come in clutch for Palentine’s Day celebraters and concocted a series of chocolate, fudgy, caramel and creamy flavors.-Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough- Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough is the perfect flavor when you can’t decide between two of the best dessert: chocolate chips or ice-cream. With this flavor, you get the best of both worlds.-Chocolate Fudge Brownie- Again, another mixture of two amazing desserts, Chocolate Fudge Brownie includes both chocolate ice-cream and real chunks of fudge brownies. This will surely satisfy the chocolate-craving tooth.-Phish Food- Yes, this is a real flavor of ice-cream. Phish Food is gooey marshmallow swirls, caramel swirls and fudge fish, all mixed into rich chocolate ice-cream. -Chunky Monkey- Go bananas for this famous flavor of walnuts and fudge chunks folded into creamy banana ice-cream. This flavor can be considered “good for you” due to the banana reference.-Chocolate Therapy- To all the chocoholics, your antidote has been found. Chocolate Therapy starts with creamy chocolate ice-cream, and progresses in choco-content with chocolate cookies and swirls of chocolate pudding ice-cream.-Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl- This flavor is pretty self-explanatory. Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl is a mixture of milk chocolate ice-cream and the swirls of thick peanut butter, sounds similar to a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup.-Triple Caramel Chunk- Triple Caramel Chunk amplifies the cravings for caramel with the flavor presented in three different ways. As if the basic creamy caramel wasn’t enough, there are swirls of sticky caramel and chunks of caramel covered fudge chunks.-Milk and Cookies- To remind you of your childhood, try Milk and Cookies. This flavor goes overboard with the abundance of cookie product mixed into the base of vanilla ice-cream. It has chocolate cookie swirls, chocolate chips and chocolate chocolate chip cookies. (Yes, there are supposed to be two “chocolate”s in the last ingredient there.-Strawberry Cheesecake- Strawberry Cheesecake will at least get some pink coloring into the mixture and can be considered “healthy” because of the strawberries...right?-Cherry Garcia- Just incase you don’t love the strawberry flavor but are hoping for some fruitful ice-cream, Cherry Garcia is there to rescue. Side Note, it’s pink for Palentine’s Day! Even though you may not have a bae to curl up with, you can always spoon with your favorite pint of ice-cream and a movie. The ultimate charm, August Waters will keep you company with all your Pals. There is not better way to celebrate Palentine’s Day (AKA Single-Awareness Day).
