Teacher Lip Sync Battle
This year’s 2017 homecoming rally concluded with a series of lip sync battles. Teacher lip sync battles. Teachers were invited to compete and put on lip sync-ed performances at the rally in battle for the prize of $3,000 or a trip to Hawaii.Between the popularity of online shows, like James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke” and Chrissy Teigen’s “Celebrity Lip Sync Battle”, the idea to have a lip sync battle was one that originated in administration. “The idea of the staff lip-sync battle came from the 6 years that I was Activities Director at Mater Dei. It was a tradition there for 25 years. The students enjoyed watching teachers perform out of their element. I thought to try the idea two years ago at Samohi and it was successful. I wasn't the administrator in charge of Activities last year so we did not do the contest. This year I'm in charge of ASB again so I decided to do the lip-sync battle again. I have also been inspired by watching the lip-sync battle on cable,” Dr. Hector Medrano said. With the help of some of Medrano’s travel agency colleagues, the trip and funds were donated. With that, the contest was advertised and opened to all Samo staff. The contestants included Nicole Perrine as Beyonce, Chon Lee as Taylor Swift, Randy Denis as the NERD, Amy Golden, Andrea Shore, Maribel Pulido and Amy Bisson as Samo divas, Annette Gromala as Lady Gaga, Wilma Iniguez, Jenny Nicolas and Johanna De LaRosa singing Despacito, Ramsey Lambert as Bruno Mars, Joe Johnson as Biggie Smalls, Rob Howard as Kendrick Lamar and Chancy as Missy Elliot. The winner was Gromala for her impersonation of Lady Gaga. “With my prize, I want to buy a trip for me, my sister and my mom to Peru. My mom’s bucket list is to go to Machu Picchu and I want to make that possible,” Gromala said.
