Human Rights Watch Educated on Homeless Issue

On Nov. 6, Tamar Chafets, an advocate for School On Wheels and worker from the Human Rights Watch, spoke to members of the Human Rights Watch Task Force club during flex time, and presented to three humanities classes on youth homelessness and how affected students can receive help.  The club contacted Chafets through their Human Rights Watch intern from UCLA, Eden Ballard, believing it was important for Chafets to talk to students about her past experience in helping the homeless. Chafets shared stories of individuals she worked with to inspire and inform students on how they can help others in similar situations.  Chafets’ talk on campus inspired and empowered many students in attendance. Her personal experiences drew in students’ attention and taught them how to contribute to relief measure of this issue.  “I loved having Tamar speak. I think it was a wonderful experience to listen to someone so knowledgeable, and I learned a lot and feel more driven to help,” co-president Alexandra Raphling (’22) said. Overall, students in attendance felt that hearing from Chafets was a positive experience, presenting them with larger goals like helping those we know and properly spread awareness of youth homelessness.
