Facebook flailing in the world of social media

Through the past couple years, Facebook has become mostly irrelevant to much of the younger generation. Many wonder why kids here at Samo still decide to use it, since it has fallen behind multiple other social media platforms. The falling point for Facebook started in 2015. Today the number of teens that use Facebook aged 13 to 17 has decreased by 20 percent, according to “The Guardian.” The reasoning behind this is simply that teens and others tend to follow what is trending and do not want to fall behind in the newest networks launched. Instagram and Snapchat, two of the most popular social networks, were launched a couple years before the downfall of Facebook began. People were interested in trying out the new platforms, which gained them popularity and left Facebook in the back of people’s minds.A great amount of Facebook’s users are people of ages of 24 to 34, which makes sense to why more adults than students understand and are more comfortable using Facebook than any other platform. With the number of people using Facebook decreasing, students are wondering why others still rely on it. In fact, two of our very own Samo organizations, Delians and marching band, use it as a main platform of communication. One of Delians’ secretaries, Abbie Grossman (’19), explained their choice to use Facebook by arguing it’s just more convenient. “Facebook is a platform that is used by people from a range of generations, so it makes it easier to keep teachers, parents and students informed,” Grossman said.Grossman also said that using the Remind app would be a good idea.Marching band Drum Major, Isabella Chuecos (’19), explains that Facebook makes for easier communication with adults.“Facebook levels the playing field. If we were to use Remind, it would almost be patronizing to order around paid adults via text. It’s also a traditional thing, that we’ve been using Facebook for a while,” Chuecos said.Compared to the rest of the clubs and organizations at school these are some ones that use Facebook as their main platform to communicate. It has been replaced with the Remind app that many teachers and students use now to communicate homework assignments and important dates with one another. As Facebook continues to become irrelevant in the social media world, it is very likely that many Samo clubs and organizations will move away from using the once-popular app in the future.
