Advantage Samo
As the boys tennis preseason kicks off, coach Wilston Poon, who has been coaching at Samo for 13 years, is excited about where this year will take the team. So far, the team has had two non-league games, losing the first against Loyola High School but coming back strong and beating Crossroads High School. “We played much better against Crossroads after having played Loyola. The guys felt more comfortable and loose going into the match,” Poon said. Prior to the season, the team has had many great practices and worked hard on their match play. Poon added that the new freshman in the program have already made a significant impact, and that their new talent combined with that of returning juniors and seniors has created a stronger team than last year. “With more hard-work and matches under our belt, we hope to be ready to go into season. We have a great group of guys who love playing with each other,” Poon said. The team is aiming to win league, as opposed to coming in second like in the past couple of years. However, their ultimate goal is to make a run at CIF. “Preseason is going well; the guys are all improving and we are looking forward to a strong season and hopefully CIF as well,” varsity team captain Kirun Cheong (’18) said. Their next game is away, against Peninsula High School on March 21.
