Boys water polo tallies another away victory

On Oct. 5, the Samo’s varsity boy’s water polo team surpassed Culver City High School with an enormous lead and won the match at 15-3. Samo is currently undefeated in their league games. Before the audience (or Culver City) could blink, the score was 8-2. From there, Cormac Flanders (’21) scored multiple times and goalie Aaron Akhavan (’20) denied the opposition every goal.By halftime, the score was 12-2. Samo used more substitutes than in previous home games. Culver City woke up and struggled against Samo, slowing their progress, but Samo still scored an additional three goals over the next two quarters. Team captain, Sawyer Koetters (’19), anticipated Samo’s victory. “[Culver City’s players] don’t have a club program so it’s nearly impossible to develop kids from a young age. It’s a problem that a lot of schools face,” Koetters said. Coach Matthew Flanders, ever focused on improvement and honing skills, has overseen the team’s progress since training began on Aug. 17. “We have gotten more disciplined and stronger as a group, but we still have a ways to go,” Flanders said. The game ended with Samo far ahead at a score of 15-3. Their next home game is part of the South Bay Tournament on Oct. 6, and the next home league game is on Oct. 17 vs. Torrance High School.
