Girls golf swings into action
As Samo’s girls golf season begins, head coach Kevin McKeown is eagerly preparing them for the exciting season. Alongside him are captain Emily Goldman (’18) and co-captain Emily Dorsey (’18). These leaders all have specific goals for the season and hopes that each player will experience a personal breakthrough. Samo’s girls golf has already started their season with their first tournament against West High School on Tuesday Aug. 29. Unfortunately, they lost the first match, but they still have many more opportunities for victory.McKeown stresses that the early start of the season is putting the team on a time crunch to work in cohesion and work as a unit to gain victory at their matches. “We are challenged with building chemistry with the girls on the team as quickly as possible because the season is short. We are basically done mid-October so we need to hit the ground running,” McKeown said.Goldman has been a loyal team member for four years and held the title of co-captain for two years. Goldman has high hopes for each player this season. “I want to see the team’s skill grow and their passion for the sport grow. I’m excited to see our improvement as the season goes on,” Goldman said.Like many other athletes, the girls on the golf team face the challenge of pressure from their competitors. Goldman knows that her team can conquer these challenges. “We are competing in a league with very talented girls. With our team being new to Samo, we are working on building up our skill level to be just as competitive as other schools. I know our girls can handle it and we are always up for the challenge,” Goldman said. Success and triumph are goals that the girls on the team strive for and are working to develop as girls golf becomes a growing sport at Samo.Dorsey has been a player on the team for three years. “For this season, I really hope to play great golf and create a lot of fun memories as a team to end my high school experience,” Dorsey said. Like Goldman, Dorsey also aims to strengthen the team’s performance and expresses that their execution is one of the team’s weaknesses. “We are all really trying to improve our competitiveness and lower our scores,” said Dorsey.McKeown and both captains have great goals for their team and hope to lead them to victory this season. As tournaments become more frequent and consistent, they are working harder than ever to lower their scores.
