Girls' tennis starts season with an impressive win
Samohi Varsity girls tennis kicked off their new season this Tuesday, Sept. 17 in a non league match against Crossroads. The effort that they’ve put in during their practices and pre-season games is definitely paying off - this season is off to a very good start, as they ended up winning 15-3. All the team members played impressively, making coach Wilston Poon very proud. “I’m very glad to see our doubles players do so well today, and am happy to see our progress going into our regular season.” Poon said. Varsity co-captain Geni Kapilonis (’20) played excellently. She completely defeated her opponent, winning 5-2 in a singles game. While watching her play, it’s evident that she’s very passionate and determined when it comes to tennis. Throughout the entire game, she was intensely focused, losing even a small game wasn’t an option for her. As captain, her positivity and determination do her and her teammates very well, and she is hoping that the rest of the team will adopt a similar attitude to better their chances of winning every match. She’s very eager to start off the season and get to know her teammates better. “This year looks like it’s gonna be great, we have a lot of promising new players. I’m really proud of our team for winning this match, I think this is going to be a really fun season.” Kapilonis said. Evy Segal (’22) was expected to do well, and so far she has not disappointed. This match, she won every singles game she played. Segal took the games she played very seriously and displayed a similar attitude to that of her captain. The Varsity girls made their team proud this match, and hope to keep up the impressive work. Their next game is Thursday, Sept. 19 against Beverly Hills High School.
