Girls' volleyball set up for success
Samo girls’ volleyball team is coming into the 2019-2020 school year running. Only a couple weeks into the season and the varsity and JV teams have already defeated Torrance High School and Culver City in the early parts of the season. Frosh, the team of made up of freshman and sophomore players, proudly emerged undefeated from their season’s first tournament and won the school a championship. This year’s varsity volleyball team is led by co-captains Dylan Leight (’20) and Ella Dreiboltz (’21). Everyone is beginning to settle in to their different positions, their different teams but are eager to play together. Varsity members presently mention a distinct note of unity amongst the group. “The majority of our starters are returning varsity from last year so we already have a great team chemistry,” said Dreiboltz (’21). Last year, head coach Liane Sato lead the team to victory as they became co-league champs of their division, with Culver City. Many players also qualified for elite ocean league teams, proudly representing Samo with their high level of skills. This year, the team hopes to establish their status as sole league champs , no longer sharing the title with Culver City. They also strive to redeem themselves after their early defeat during the CIF playoffs last fall. “We definitely want to make it to CIF championships considering we have come close in previous years,” said Leight (’20). The samo girls’ volleyball team is scheduled to appear in the North Gym for a total of five games this season starting on September 17th against Culver City. They will typically be around 3:15 p.m. on Tuesdays, where varsity and junior varsity occupy the North Gym while frosh-soph play in the South Gym. The team’s last home match should take place October 16th against El Segundo.
