Boys' tennis ready to make strong strokes in new season
Boys’ tennis is hopeful for an amazing season with sophomores like Nikola Kuraica (’21) and Oliver Catanzano (’21) and reigning seniors Josh Segal (’19) and Nino Collias (’19). So far, in their preseason matches they have a score of 1-2, but they are 1-0 in season because they beat El Segundo High School on Tuesday, March 5. The team has been hitting and working hard to prepare for a great season. They are working towards winning CIF and team building. “I think we can go undefeated this season because we are stronger mentally and physically,” Kuraica said. The captains Segal and Collias are excited for their last season. They help the others work on form and keep up morale. “Nino and I make sure everyone stays positive and we get everyone hyped up for matches. We like to lead chants and give pre-match speeches which get the team excited to beat our opponent,” Segal said. Despite their wins the team still has a long way to go. They will be persistent and diligent in bringing a fighting spirit to all their matches. Coach Wilston Poon talks about how the team is doing so far. “With all the rain it has been hard to get out there and practice so we had some really tough matches early on and it showed in our lack of practice. Otherwise things now have been a lot better and the boys are getting into a better groove as the season progresses,” Poon said. The team is gaining confidence with every win which will help them out in season and hopefully get them to CIFs. They will continue to work hard especially on their doubles. They need to work on their doubles because a few players are hurt so other team members need to step up and fight for every win.
