Marvel’s ‘Eternals’ is eternally succesful

Holden Kopman, Staff Writer

The Eternals, available only in theatres, was released on November 5 and directed by Chloé Zhao. It’s an action-packed flick with numerous accounts of love, belonging and betrayal.

The story follows the events of Avengers Endgame, where earth’s lesser known heroes have parted ways and taken on new lives on Earth. Eternals are created by the world conquering celestials, with the sole purpose of preventing deviants from messing with human affairs. The Eternals are soon re-assembled after an attack on main protagonist Sersi (Gemma Chan), by a new, more evolved deviant. One by one they are shown being reunited, each having created their own settlements on earth.

The movie flashes throughout many different eras in human existence, but for the majority of the time in the present day. Each Eternal brings forth their own unique powers. For example, Sersi can change the form of any solid object, Ikaris possess’ superman like powers with the ability of flight as well as laser vision and Druig can control vast amounts of human’s minds. Another important topic to touch upon is this movie brings forth the first LGBTQ charecter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU); the Eternal ‘Phastos’. In the past, the MCU has explored many different relationships in multiple timelines or circumstances, but has never truly shown support towards the LGBTQ movement until now, introducing a powerful role model to express it. With the change of diversity and whole new perspective this movie has brought to the MCU, there is no doubt that this will open many new boundaries to come.

The stunning, bright and jaw dropping effects, booming noises and brilliant acting in this groundbreaking movie has truly made the experience that much better. The recent release of movies such as ‘Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ and ‘Venom: Let there be Carnage’ have  given competition to The Eternals, but in many senses cannot catch up  Alongside all the known wonders this movie has brought, it also ties in to future MCU possibilities and the expansion of the known fictional universe. The movie brings the perfect inclusion of comedy, with its snarky remarks and unique interactions between each Eternal, to this drama-filled story and is truly worthwhile to watch.
