TikTok's tasty Thanksgiving treats
By Grace Gyepes, Staff Writer
TikTok is a social media app that skyrocketed in popularity during the summer of 2019, with most of its users being teens and young adults. By sharing content that ranges from dances to politics to comedy, everything can be found within the app’s user-created videos. A significant side of the app is filled with food-related content, where you can find videos that help people to eat healthier, teach people how to cook at home and demonstrate what the creator eats in a day. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, you are almost sure to find new holiday recipes.
One of my favorite recipes on TikTok is the “Ultimate Loaded Mashed Potatoes.” In this video, the user @flakeyslat teaches us how to make mashed potatoes, hence the recipe title. This recipe is more of a soup than potatoes, yet somehow every time I make them, they still manage to blow my mind. The recipe goes as follows:
Ingredients
- 3 ½ pounds of Yukon Potatoes
- 2 cups of milk
- Half a cup of butter
- 2 cloves of garlic
- A splash of cream
- Bacon
Directions
1. Peel and cut the potatoes into 1-inch pieces and put them in a pot with water and salt on high heat. Boil the potatoes for 15-20 minutes in a pot (or until they smush easily).
3. Add butter to the pot with milk.
4. Smash and peel the garlic.
6. Add the garlic and cream to the pot with the milk and butter.
7. Put the pot on the stove, setting the stove to medium heat.
8. Steam for 10 minutes.
9. Fish out the garlic.
10. Drain and mash the potatoes. Then, add the milk, butte and cream sauce to the mashed potatoes.
13. Mix all together until smooth.
14. Add salt.
15. Cut up bacon into pieces.
16. Cook bacon until crisp/to your liking.
17. Add bacon, chives and a bit of black pepper to the top of the potatoes.
18. ENJOY!
Of course, it would not be Thanksgiving without apple pie. Apple pie made from scratch makes me so happy inside, especially when it is baked with a homemade crust.
