What's with the "Drivers License" drama?

After weeks of speculation, the three artists involved in the “Driver’s License” love triangle have finally released a statement claiming it was all a publicity stunt.
The rumors started when Oliva Rodrigio released her hit single “Drivers License” and fans speculated it was about her “High School Musical: The Musical” co-star Joshua Bassett. After hearing the lines “I got my drivers license last week/just like we always talked about”, fans theorized it was in reference to when Bassett helped Rodrigo learn to drive. I mean, it’s not like anyone else could have taught Rodrigo how to drive. Sabrina Carpenter was brought into the storyline when Rodrigo mentions a blonde girl. Since Carpenter is the only girl with blonde hair in Hollywood, fans quickly drew the conclusion that the line was about her. Aside from her hair color, Carpenter and Bassett also posted a TikTok together on Halloween that made fans think they were romantically involved because a female and male can’t just be friends. At the time, none of the involved parties released statements regarding the situation. However, Bassett and Carpenter released singles shortly after.
A week after Rodrigo dropped her single, Bassett released his single “Lie, Lie, Lie” and fans were quick to say the song was in relation to Rodrigo’s. Based on the title and lyrics, it was assumed that Basset was calling out Rodrigo for lying in her song. Basset released a statement clarifying his song was not about anyone in particular. However, even the statement was not enough for fans to stop making theories about the alleged drama.
Exactly a week after “Lie, Lie, Lie” dropped, Carpenter released her newest single “Skin”. This is when fans went insane. After hearing the first verse, there was no doubt the song was a clap back at Rodrigo. “Maybe blonde was the only rhyme” is in no doubt referring to Rodrigo’s line “You’re probably with that blonde girl”. There are quite a few more lines in the song where fans thought Carpenter was rubbing her and Bassett’s relationship in the face of Rodrigo. Really, the layers to this entire situation are incredible. Honestly, this PR stunt made Carpenter look a little bit childish. Again, all parties failed to release statements regarding the rumors.
It wasn’t until the first week of February that the three artists released statements via Twitter.
“I actually love that blonde girl!” Rodrigo tweeted.
“I guess you could say it was all a lie,” Bassett tweeted.
“Ha! We got under your skin!” Carpenter tweeted.
The publicity stunt definitely worked seeing as fans didn’t stop making theories and stating their opinions on the drama for weeks. Regardless, we are in for an interesting second season of “High School Musical: The Musical” if the rumors are true about Rodrigo and Bassett.
