An insider guide to the beloved pumpkin spice latte
Ava Memarzadeh, Staff writer
Now that October has arrived, people all over the world are looking forward to arguably the best fall beverage: the Pumpkin Spice Latte. The drink consists of your typical coffee latte, but is sweetened with hints of cinnamon, nutmeg and pumpkin. With it’s comforting autumn flavors there is no doubt as to why it’s a fan favorite! There are a myriad of establishments selling pumpkin spice lattes this season, which raises the question...which one is best?
Starbucks
3.5/5 Stars
When thinking of the infamous pumpkin spice latte, the first thing that comes to mind is Starbucks. Although Starbucks is a large chain, the service is commendable and you are always met with a smile and friendly attitude. The drink itself comes with the milk and coffee mixed into a beautiful caramel hue, paired with the spice mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg and pumpkin sprinkled on top. The initial sip provides an instant boost in serotonin and an explosion of flavor. Without a doubt, Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte was the most festive for the fall season. However, the base of coffee was not the strongest point of the drink—it lacked flavor and tasted watered down. Overall, the clout surrounding Starbucks and their Pumpkin Spice Latte is no sham, so if you’re in the mood for a flavorful fall drink, this should certainly be on your list.
Peet’s Coffee
2/5 Stars
Peet’s Coffee was the next chain on the list. Being a smaller franchise, the experience was much more personal and warm. Peet’s Pumpkin Spice Latte came with a much nicer presentation than the other’s. The coffee was poured over the milk and left unmixed, creating a mesmerizing ombre effect. It’s taste was strong, sharp and perfect for coffee lovers. Unfortunately, the latte lacked in it’s pumpkin spice flavor, which is one of the most important components of this festive fall drink. This absence of flavor was disappointing, as the ultimate point of the drink was defeated.
Coffee Bean
4/5 Stars
The last stop of my exhibition was Coffee Bean. Although they seem to be less popular among the younger generation, Coffee Bean’s Pumpkin Spice Latte was a pleasant surprise. The coffee was solid—not too bitter and not too sweet—and a perfect addition to the sweetness of the spice. The level of flavor was a median between that of Starbucks and Peet’s coffee as well. Although it could have been a little more flavorful for those who buy the drink specifically for the pumpkin taste, I thought it was well balanced and enjoyed the aftertaste. Overall, I would recommend Coffee Bean’s pumpkin spice latte if you’re looking for the perfect place to get this fall special.
