Five must-have additions to your closet this season

Despite months of quarantine, many high school students have continued to stay up to date on the latest fashion trends. Winter 2021 has introduced some of the most popular clothing trends yet, which has many people excited.

Flared yoga pants are definitely a blast from the past. Emma Chamberlain, American internet star, has re-popularized flared yoga pants making them a must-have in every teenage girl's closet. The pants have gained popularity largely through TikTok and have begun selling out in well-known stores such as Lulu Lemon and Free People. Many people are drawn to the pants because of their flattering fit and how they add a 2000s touch to every outfit. One of these people is Samo senior Sophie Yera (’21).

“I literally love flared pants because they really add something to an otherwise boring outfit. You can wear them with any boring T-shirt, and suddenly your outfit is so much more interesting and cute,” Yera said

Cropped puffer jackets are one of the most worn clothing items of winter 2021. Although larger, oversized puffer jackets have been trendy in previous years, cropped puffers have stolen the spotlight in 2021. One of the reasons why puffer jackets are so popular is because they are warm and effective for cold weather while still being flattering. They also work with almost every outfit, whether it be fancy or casual. They come in a variety of colors to match countless looks and can be worn with numerous different bottoms such as jeans, skirts or leggings. Samo sophomore Elijiah Meyuhas (’23) recently purchased a puffer jacket for himself for the winter.

“I like puffer jackets because they’re warm without being too bulky and look good with most [out]fits,” Meyuhas said.

Although leather in general has begun to come back in style, leather pants have more specifically caught the attention of many fashion enthusiasts. Leather pants first became popular in the 1990s after the Spice Girls performed in them. Now they are more stylish than ever and are seen in many fashion shows as well as on many clothing influencers and trend followers. The pants are perfect for whatever look or occasion you're going for, and are classy yet bold at the same time. You can match them with a turtleneck or sweater for a fancier look or with a tank top or short sleeve for an everyday outfit. Clothing lovers such as Melody Roohani (’24) like the pants because of their complementary fit.

“I really like leather pants because they are very flattering and make my legs look

longer which is good cause I’m short,” Roohani said.

Mini shoulder bags have also become very popular during this winter season, and have been seen on celebrities such as style icons Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid. Originally made by Coco Chanel, their sales have skyrocketed this fall and winter, selling in many places no matter the store genre. One of the appealing aspects of the bag is that they come in all different fabrics and shapes which allows people to find a bag that matches their respective style. They also have a large range of prices starting at as low as 10 dollars and reaching as high as thousands of dollars. Many people such as Sarah Salloway (’21) understand the hype behind the purse.

“I think that shoulder bags are really cute and convenient for carrying essentials such as phones, wallets, etc. plus they are a great size and a great accessory that can complement outfits and make them so much more put together,” Salloway said.

Originally becoming in style in the 1930s, sweater vests now are as trendy as ever. With big brands such as Prada, Gucci and Dior dropping sweater vests, these are on the wishlist of hundreds of clothing enthusiasts this winter. They can be styled in different ways whether it be layering to combat cold weather or a tank top for warmer Southern California winters. Many like to wear sweater vests over tight long sleeve tops with jeans or an oversized one with a skirt. Among these people is Simona Trent (’23).

“I like sweater vests because they're very classy but also socially acceptable to wear in a lot of different circumstances. You can dress them up or dress them down depending on the circumstances,” Trent said.
