Snack suggestions courtesy of the Samohi staff
By Alani Kanan, Staff Writer
This year, with Samo’s newly adopted 80 minute class periods, it’s easy to get peckish between or during class. The inclusion of snacks throughout the school day is vital to staying focused, but snacks can get repetitive and dull. Here are a few of the Samohi staff’s favorite school day snacks that are quick, unique and sure to keep you sustained throughout lengthy block periods.
Cucumber slices and rice vinegar sprinkled with sesame seeds
My go-to snack during the school day is cucumber slices and rice vinegar sprinkled with sesame seeds. This snack takes less than five minutes to make so it's great to throw together between classes. Mostly, it is crunchy, simple and refreshing!
Pumpkin bread or trail mix from trader joes
We always have some kind of pumpkin or banana bread in my house, and I love the cashew, almond and chocolate trail mix from Trader Joe's because it’s sweet (chocolate) and healthy (nuts).
Goldfish
Goldfish is love. Goldfish is life.
Trader Joe's dried mango
Not the soft and juicy kind! Unpopular opinion, but the soft and juicy ones are too sweet. However, the original dried mango is perfect.
Cereal with frozen berries
This snack is the best. Any cereal of choice works (I even use just oats sometimes) and mix it with any type of milk, frozen raspberries, chocolate chips and nut butter. It's the perfect mix of cold, sweet and crunchy.
Frozen grapes with lime juice
To prepare this, I like to cut green grapes in half, coat them with lime juice and put them in the freezer overnight. It's the perfect snack to have during class since you can eat them with a fork and not get food all over your computer. Plus it's getting hot again so I highly recommend trying!
Kix cereal
While Kix cereal may be shaded for its muted flavors, this works to its advantage as it won't overpower your palette or stomach. This means it can be enjoyed from morning until late at night.
Peanut butter oat cups
To make peanut butter oat cups, you mix one cup of peanut butter and ¼ cup of honey or maple syrup in a bowl and then melt it in the microwave. Then, mix in 1 ¾ cup of any kind of quick oatmeal or oats. Then I like to put them in cupcake wrappers or just a mini muffin tin and freeze them for an hour. It's so good and doesn't have sugar other than the honey so it's not that unhealthy too! It’s kind of like a chewy granola cupcake.
Granola with nonfat Greek yogurt
I mix about ⅓ -½ cup of greek yogurt with oats and honey granola by Cascadian Farms and it's heaven on earth.
