Drive-in days have returned

Santa Monica has opened a new drive-in movie theater. As of Dec. 1, “Drive-In at Santa Monica Airport” by Rooftop Cinema Club will be open to the public.
“With ICE being canceled I don’t really have much to do during winter break, then they said they were going to open a drive-in movie! I was so excited, I just got my license, so it’s going to be so much fun,” Avery Smith (’23) said.
Starting at the beginning of December, and ending on Dec. 30, two movies will be shown every day of the month. The programs have been hand-picked features from everything such as cult films, to classics, to new releases. The following movies are just some of the features being shown over the next two weeks: “The Great Gatsby,” “Tangled,” “Die Hard,” and “Elf”. However, only four out of the 34 movies being shown have tickets still available.
The lot opens early before the screening, allowing viewers to settle themselves, relax and eat before the movie begins. Once parked, you can tune in through the local radio station to listen to the movie. Every location comes complete with a food menu and a full bar featuring refreshing cocktails, beer and wine for those of age. The box office is also stocked with classic movie snacks, candy and popcorn.
“I went to go watch ‘10 Things I hate About You’, it was so much fun. I really enjoyed it. Everyone was parked so that you could see the screen no matter what! I think it’s a cool experience,” Nicole Tampanaru (’21) said.
The new attraction brings a bit of the old days to modern life. Movies range from being child-friendly to appropriate for those of highschool age or older.
The theater will be open every day this December, with the exception of Christmas day.
