"Fall" in love with food
Autumn is hands down the greatest out of all four of the seasons - especially when it comes to food. As the temperatures cool down, you begin to look forward to cups of hot tea in the morning, bowls of savory soup in the evening and baked goods fresh out of the oven. There’s a certain romance in autumn that no other season has when it comes to its seasonal delights.
Every year, people practically go crazy for the flavors exclusive to autumn, especially pumpkin. There are social media posts everywhere marketing the flavor that has finally come in season. Whether it’s pumpkin loaf, pumpkin spiced latte, or even pumpkin pie, there are hordes of customers in line to check out their pumpkin delight. At the same time, so have apples- particularly with the strong flavor we all know and love, Autumn Glory. Autumn Glory is the flavor found in apple sauce and cider, known to have hints of cinnamon and caramel in the taste. Grocery store aisles are lined to the brim with stocked-up apple cider, apple strudels finally found in the pastry aisle and the autumn-beloved caramel apples. So when both are finally out of season? There are tears streaming from the consumers’ eyes. After all, pumpkin is gone until the next year and apples will no longer taste the same. It’s just such a travesty.
Autumn is also known as the harvest season around the world, just chock full of traditions. From Jewish Sukkot to Germany’s Oktoberfest to America’s Thanksgiving, the season is known and celebrated for food in every household.
“Fall is hands down the best. Every Thanksgiving, my family makes a ton of food and pies. I just love the season,” Chaitan Butte (’23) said.
You don’t see that for any of the other three seasons, do you? You don’t get that anywhere else, really. What does spring or summer have better than autumn? Fresh fruit? Budding vegetables? Who is really going to choose a melon that you can get year-round at a grocery store over an autumn-exclusive pumpkin? And people may argue that winter is by far better than autumn when it comes to meals, but both seasons have just the same hearty food and traditions. You could even argue that winter is the chiller, rip-off version of autumn; that to which, many agree.
“Autumn's the best. It’s got Thanksgiving! Christmas just rips off Thanksgiving food anyways,” Kai Necci (’23) said, visibly passionate about the topic.
Autumn truly is the season of harvest. Everything about it is cozy, comforting and nourishing. Whether it’s the homemade pies or fresh pumpkins, there’s simply just an appeal to the season that trumps the other seasons.
