Boys’ Volleyball sets up for the upcoming season

Samo’s boys’ volleyball team will start their season with a tournament in Torrance from Feb. 25-26. Both times and opponents for those two days have yet to be decided. However, their first game, outside of the tournament, is scheduled for March 1 on the Samo campus against Torrance.

“For the season, considering a lot of us on the team are new to volleyball, my main goal for the season is to play as much as possible and learn how to work together; especially because of [COVID-19] last year, we didn’t have much time to play. Overall, I’m really hoping that we can build a strong team community that understands the power of using each other’s strengths,” Varsity Captain DJ Bevan (’23) said.

A decently sized team of 23 players, composed of both old and new faces, the players this year are anticipating a successful season. With an interesting mix of seasoned players and a fresh generation coming in, strong coaching and leadership will play a big role in the team’s success this year. Practicing every day after school in the gymnasium until 5:00 p.m., members are hopeful that the preparation they put in during the off-season will pay off in how they play. With new leaders this year in David Hix (’22) and DJ Bevan (’23), the team will crash onto the Bay League anew. They play challenging teams across the season in Redondo and Mira Costa, so keep an eye out for their names on the schedule.

“I think this season will be pretty good for us. We’re facing tough teams this year, so we’re definitely going to have some fun games. I’m just excited to see how we’ll do,” player Kincade Pittard (’23) said.
