HOTLB: What do Athletes want in the New Gym
The Gold Gym is part of the third construction phase at Samo, and is estimated to be completed in 2024. Out of the approximately 2,863 students who attend Samo about 1,000 of them also participate in sports. In order to accommodate these athletes, sufficient gym space is needed. Luckily for the athletes, the new gym will be two stories high, with two courts on the first floor and another on the second floor. There will also be pull-out bleachers that can seat 800 people. Although current seniors and juniors will not be able to use the completed gym, sophomores and freshmen will be the first to. With so much to expect, here are some things that current sophomore and freshmen athletes want to see in the new gym.
“A new locker room would be pretty nice, along with some more training equipment. Air conditioning would be pretty solid too, and a cool painting of a Viking.” Isaiah Fernandez (‘26) said.
“Since I’m on the wrestling team it’d be cool to have more equipment because right now we don’t have good equipment like weights.” Kevin Watanabe (’26) said.
“It would be really nice to have lockers, because there are some for other sports but not in the cheer room. It also gets really hot in the room, so we’re all hoping for air conditioning. Speakers would also be nice.” Zoe Dale (’26) said.
“New balls and equipment are always awesome. I just hope the gym is done by the time I graduate,” Jane Robinson (’25) said.
“Especially for home games, all of us players would appreciate warm-up music and a good speaker system would be absolutely amazing in the new gym.” Jayden Xu (’25) said.
