Weekend Activities: Live This No. 3

The moral of this weekend is: work hard, play hard. Even if you’re not taking the daunting SAT on Saturday, you’ve earned the right to relax. School is getting tougher as the year progresses, and now that the grading period just ended, it's the perfect weekend to take a break. So take advantage of living in LA, and explore away!Friday night, if you want to set your secret talent free, or love laughing at tone-deaf people, check out the cozy and charming Unurban Café (3301 Pico Blvd.) where they host an open mic night every Friday. If you plan on performing, make sure to come sign up for a slot before 7 p.m., otherwise just take a seat and prepare to be surprised. If you want to see 100 percent talent instead, go support Samo’s Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra at The Beatles concert in Barnum Hall on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for Samo students, $20 for adults. Celebrate the music of The Beatles by singing along and dressing up as your favorite band member (don’t forget about Ringo). Are you feeling stuck between wanting to watch something, and wanting to be outdoors? No worries, there's a solution. If you didn’t get a chance to see “The Hunger Games,” or are perhaps just a religious fan, go down to the Santa Monica Pier at 7:30 p.m. for a free, open air screening of, you guessed it, “The Hunger Games.” There will be food and music starting at 6:00 p.m. So bring your friends and family for a night of unwinding to the ocean breeze. On Saturday, show some school spirit by checking out former Samo student Connor Vance and his buddies’ band, The Dustbowl Revival. They will play at McCabe’s Guitar Shop (3101 Pico Blvd.) at 8 p.m.If you’ve been staring at your dancing shoes lately and wishing you could put them on, I have the perfect event for you! Saturday night there is going to be one of the many legendary FMLY bike rides. FMLY rides consist of a huge mob that bikes from one concert to another. While hopping places you get to “rethink LA” and discover new places you didn’t even know existed. FMLY’s motto is: “Everywhere we go is our home, everyone we meet is our FMLY!” Not only will you enjoy yourself with your friends, you’ll also make new ones. The bands that are going to be playing are Manhattan Murder Mystery, Snow White and Wild Pack of Canaries. The ride starts at around 7 p.m. at Media Park in Culver City. Join for an unforgettable (and extremely sweaty) night. On Sunday, in order to detox from your (hopefully) stimulating and animated weekend, start the day off with a healthy release of endorphins at the Santa Monica 5000. Be part of the only race that raises money for local student athletes and school sports programs (including Samo's) at 7:30 a.m. at Ocean Park Blvd. and the beach. If you haven’t registered, make sure to be there by 6:30 a.m., when there will be stands and people to assist you.If 7:30 a.m. is too early for you,  consider participating in CicLAvia! Grab your bike, skate, rollerblades or running shoes and explore LA! CicLAvia Walks is similar to FMLY rides, but is better for family bonding and you don't necessarily have to bike. During the walk there will be performances, art and other crazy kinds of fun. The route includes Exposition Park, Chinatown and Mariachi Plaza in Boyle Heights. So, this is a fantastic opportunity to get to know our city better.Whatever it is you do this weekend, remember it's up to you to make it special, so reward yourself after your first six weeks of school!mazcarate@thesamohi.comhttp://www.ciclavia.org/http://www.mccabes.com/condata.htmlhttp://santamonicapier.org/frontporchcinema/http://www.santamonica5000.com/
