Weekend Activities: Live This No. 7
Micol AzcarateStaff WriterUnless you live in a pineapple under the sea, you probably know that Sunday was Daylight Saving Time. We moved our clocks back one hour, and now our nights are longer. So, now that the days are shorter, take advantage of the prolonged nights to do something you wouldn’t normally dare to. Experiment, add a new entry to your secret diary and make sure to be wisely reckless. On Friday: don’t waste the opportunity to let your inner artist soar and check out Karen Kimmel’s renowned exhibition “Wall Works: Art of Exchange” at the Santa Monica Museum of Art (G1, 2525 Michigan Ave.). Kimmel invited all SMMUSD K-12 students to interpret their surroundings into abstract art, and is now exhibiting these works to the public for free. The great part about this idea is that during the exhibition, pencils, stencils and notepads will be provided, and everyone is encouraged to interact with the art displayed. If abstract designs are not your cup of tea, or perhaps you are still craving that spooky Halloween mood, go to the Silent Movie Theater/Cinefamily (611 N. Fairfax Ave.) at midnight where the legendary space adventure “Aliens” will be playing. Let your imagination loose, and travel to a dark world full of slimy aliens, guns and all that fun stuff. And while you’re already in the Fairfax Avenue area, don’t forget to explore the streets of the heart and soul of entertainment. The Fairfax district is full of surprises at every corner, like Canter’s Deli (419 N. Fairfax Ave.), an LA landmark since 1931 where many celebrities including Marilyn Monroe have dined and hippies in the ‘60s would hang out.Seeing as you’re already in that ‘60s vibe, why not extend your trip back in time and watch “West Side Story” on Saturday at the Electric Dusk drive-in (240 W. 4th St.) at 7:30 p.m. Not only will you be watching a movie set in the ‘60s, you’ll also be going to a drive-in movie theater, aka the typical ‘60s teenager hangout spot. And to top off your time traveling, if you’re a cinematography fan, don’t miss out on Raymond Cauchetier’s “Photos De Cinéma” exhibition at Peter Fetterman Gallery (2525 Michigan Ave., Gallery A1). Photographs from pioneering new wave French movies like “À Bout de Souffle” (Breathless) and many more will be featured, so be ready to be bedazzled and groovified by that ‘60s glam!On Sunday: take a break from the past, and look to the present. Ever wonder what modern artists are up to these days? Well, discover the line “Between Light and Shadow” at Todd and Melanie Walker’s show at the DNJ Gallery (2525 Michigan Ave.). This photography exhibition introduces silk screens, lithographs, collotypes and digital prints of a combination of two of the most focal elements in art: landscapes and the nude. Once you’re done filling your mind with distorted images that will leave you scratching your head and pondering on the meaning of existence, cool off your brain fumes at Santa Monica’s outdoor ice skating rink “Ice Santa Monica” (1324 5th St.). Bring your friends and family for a fun day ice skating, or falling and making a fool of yourself. After your adventure filled weekend, you’ll need to take a moment to relax. On Monday, catch up on the sleep you haven’t been getting, and maybe, just maybe, do a little AP Bio homework.Whatever it is you do this weekend, try something you’ve never done before, leave your comfort zone and soak up the “new.”mazcarate@thesamohi.comFor more info on these events, click the links below:http://smmoa.org/index.php/exhibitions/details/261http://www.cinefamily.org/films/alien-quadrilogy-midnights/#alienshttp://www.electricduskdrivein.com/#!home/mainPagehttp://www.peterfetterman.com/exhibitions/2012-09-22_raymond-cauchetier-photos-de-cinma/http://www.dnjgallery.net/current.htmlhttp://www.downtownsm.com/ice
